Stephen Hawking Is ‘Flattered’ By Cambridge Poll

;Press Trust of India
LONDON, 2 JULY: Noted scientist Professor Stephen Hawking says he is “flattered” by a Cambridge University poll voting his book, A Brief History of Time as the publication most likely to have the same impact as Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species on future generations.
The Online poll was conducted by the University in preparation for its eagerly-awaited Darwin Anniversary Festival from 5-10 July.
Some of the world’s foremost thinkers, writers and scientists will gather in Cambridge next week for the Festival marking bicentennial birth anniversary of the naturalist.
Staff and students at Cambridge were asked which science publication of the past half-century best deserves to be remembered in 150 years’ time. This year also marks the 150th anniversary of the publication of On the Origin of Species.
Professor Hawking said: “I’m very flattered. I’m glad that so many people share my interest in the big questions How does the Universe work? Where do we come from?” The Darwin Festival features some of the scientific world’s most eminent names including Richard Dawkins and Lord Martin Rees, while Discworld author Terry Pratchett and poet Ruth Padel represent the widespread and continuing influence of Darwin on the arts.
Nobel Prize winners Sir Paul Nurse President of the Rockefeller University, and Harold Varmus will also fly in from the USA to join a host of experts in exploring Darwin’s continued legacy.

///////////////////////////The Law of Accelerating Returns
by  Ray Kurzweil

An analysis of the history of technology shows that technological change is exponential, contrary to the common-sense "intuitive linear" view. So we won't experience 100 years of progress in the 21st century -- it will be more like 20,000 years of progress (at today's rate). The "returns," such as chip speed and cost-effectiveness, also increase exponentially. There's even exponential growth in the rate of exponential growth. Within a few decades, machine intelligence will surpass human intelligence, leading to The Singularity -- technological change so rapid and profound it represents a rupture in the fabric of human history. The implications include the merger of biological and nonbiological intelligence, immortal software-based humans, and ultra-high levels of intelligence that expand outward in the universe at the speed of light.

///////////////////////////////SASIALIT=What's the reason for Bhojpuri's current popularity?  Is it merely a matter of the number of people who speak Bhojpuri being large enough for it to be a valid alternative to Hindi?  I note that a few Punjabi movies (and a lot of Punjabi dialog) have begun to make it into the mainstream, too.  Is it that these subcultures are in some way more energetic, vibrant to be able to compete with the monopoly of Hindi?

////////////////////...........And (not sure if i can explain this well, but will try) this influx of
mainly menial bhojpuri speaking workers into cities such as bombay has
also seen the introduction of 'bhojpuri item numbers' (ie, raunchy
songs) as a staple feature of Bollywood films. Perhaps producers felt
this would  draw in the crowds (used to be called the 'char anna'
crowd four anna - the cheapest ticket price)  to the theatres.

////////////////////////.....ribald folk songs exist in many cultures beyond south asia, and are sung by both men and women. like comedy, one has to be clued into the culture and be intimately familiar with the nuances of the language and slang to get at exactly what is going on. this is a matter of language barrier, and sometimes age and culture barrier (it took my husband a while to *get* tephen colbert as he rarely watches comedy) even within the same culture. but i cannot imagine a scenario where *gender* barrier will obscure meaning to the extent that only one gender owns that space.

/////////////////////............So what makes Bhojpuri cinema tick?

Bhojpuri cinema is like home-cooked food

For one, the film-makers have astutely targeted the Bhojpuri-speaking audience at home and abroad - a substantial expatriate population in places such as Mauritius, Fiji, Surinam and the West Indies.

With Bollywood productions increasingly targeting the urban middle and upper classes in India's cities, Bhojpuri directors have cashed in by churning out home-grown local fare. "

///////////////////////////////////today is the Women's Transatlantic Flight
Anniversary? In 1928, Amelia Earhart flew from Newfoundland to
Wales in 21 hours. In 1932, she became the first woman to fly
solo across the Atlantic Ocean. Trivia fans: Earhart was
called "Lady Lindy" because her slim build and facial features
resembled that of Charles Lindbergh.
